UK Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology

Abstract

The Hub will create a seamless link between science and applications by building on our established knowledge exchange activities in quantum technologies. We will transform science into technology by developing new products, demonstrating their applications and advantages, and establishing a strong user base in diverse sectors. Our overarching ambition is to deliver a wide range of quantum sensors to underpin many new commercial applications. Our key objective is to ensure that the Hub's outputs will have been picked up by companies, or industry-led TSB projects, by the end of the funding period.
The Hub will comprise: a strong fabrication component; quantum scientists with a demonstrated ability to combine scientific excellence with technological delivery; leading engineers with the broad collective expertise and connections required to develop and use new quantum sensors. We have identified, and actively involved, industry enablers to build a supply chain for quantum sensor technology. As well as direct physics connections to industry, the engineers provide strong links to relevant industrial users, thus providing information on industrial needs and enabling rapid prototype deployment in the field. To establish a coherent national collaborative effort, the Hub will include a UK network on quantum sensors and metrology, which will also exploit the connections that Prof Bongs and all Hub members have forged in Europe, the US and Asia. This inter-linkage ensures capture of the most advanced developments in quantum technology around the world for exploitation by the UK.
Quantum sensors and metrology, plus some devices in quantum communication, are the only areas where laboratory prototypes have already proven superior to their best classical counterparts. This sets the stage, credibly, for rapid and disruptive applications emerging from the Hub. The selection of prototypes will be driven by commercial pull, i.e. each prototype project within the Hub must demonstrate, from the outset, industry or practitioner engagement from our engineering and/or industrial collaborators. We have strong industry support across several disciplines with the structures in place actively to manage technology and knowledge transfer to the industry sector. Particular roles are played by NPL and e2V. We will closely collaborate with NPL as metrology end-user on clock, magnetometer and potentially Watt balance developments with a lecturer-level Birmingham-NPL fellow contributed by Birmingham University and our PRDAs spending ~17 man-years in addition to 3-5 PhD students on these joint projects in the Advanced Metrology Laboratory/incubator space. E2v have a unique industrial manufacturing/R&D facility co-located within the School of Physics and Astronomy at Nottingham that has already catalysed the expansion of their activities into the Quantum Technology domain. Public Engagement conveying the Hub's breakthroughs will be a high priority - for example annually at the Royal Society Summer Exhibitions. In addition to cohort-training of 80 PhD students working within the Hub, the Hub will contribute to the training of ~500 PhD students via electronically-shared lectures (many already running within the e-learning graduate schools MPAGS, MEGS, SEPNET and SUPA) across the institutions within the Hub.
The Hub will create an internationally-leading centre of excellence with major impact in the area of quantum sensors and metrology. To widen the impact of the Hub and ensure long-term sustainability, we will actively pursue European and other international collaborative funding for both underlying fundamental research and the technology development.

Planned Impact

The Hub will create an internationally leading centre of excellence delivering major impact in the area of quantum sensors and metrology. These technologies promise to revolutionise all of our lives in many diverse areas spanning from improved healthcare to reducing traffic congestion.
Short term economic impact will arise from the supply chain building activities in WP1-4. These will deliver novel world leading underpinning technologies such as fully wafer integrated laser systems, compact special purpose lasers, novel atom/ion chips, self-contained vacuum technology and advanced manufacturing techniques with uncommon materials. These components will immediately address specialist commercial markets (e.g. 1000s of research groups in cold atom research around the world), with the potential for significant future widening of this market. As we already have lined up numerous companies in various parts of the supply chain we expect a quick pickup of the technology.

Medium term economic impact is expected to arise from our quantum sensor developments. Here the anticipated disruptive nature of the sensor capabilities poses the challenge that not many markets exist for these devices besides defence, metrology, space and geophysics. The user-driven, engineering-led demonstration activities of the Hub are designed to address this challenge and actively pursue market-building activities. All engineering research linked to our Hub will be driven by user needs, promoting industrial adoption and generating social and economic impact, such as by reducing urban traffic congestion with better underground intelligence. We will use a significant fraction of the partnership resource for such activities, which we see as the essential step to build sufficient commercial confidence in a "spooky" and potentially disruptive quantum technology to unlock further industrial investment. This confidence in new quantum technologies will also lead to joint TSB-funded projects, in a potential second innovation stage of the Hub dominated by engineers and industry.
On a 10-50 year timescale, the sensors developed in this Hub could revolutionise a wide range of industrial processes, as diverse as: resilient communication networks; structural analysis, for example in aerospace; functional analysis, for example of electronic components; improved oil and gas recovery; CO2 sequestration supervision; construction work using underground space; assessment of water infrastructure; detection of sinkholes; assessment of the condition of dams in flood prevention. In addition, novel magnetic sensors for medical diagnosis on the cellular level and real-time imaging of brain activity could enable novel treatments of dementia and cancer, for example. Such sensors are also needed to develop functional biological systems in synthetic biology, and to enable novel human-machine interfaces with applications in, for example, the gaming market or in analysing skin types to match them with the most appropriate medications or cosmetics. We have assembled a range of industry and applied researchers in these areas, selected to transfer the Hub's outputs into real-world products.
Quantum technologies, and the underpinning fundamental science, are fascinating topics for outreach. The Hub's public engagement will include presentations in schools, at the British Science Festival, a dedicated outreach website, podcasts, and social media discussion. We will build on existing successful models such as Nottingham's "Sixty symbols" video project (http://www.sixtysymbols.com/), which has attracted >28 million views and >360,000 YouTube followers.
Overall, the technologies developed within this Hub have the potential to transform industries, medicine, and quality of life, by delivering products and markets with multi-billion to multi-trillion pound economic potential.

Description We have made a set of steps towards quantum technology, which will be more fully covered in our annual report. Here are a few examples:
- narrow-linewidth DFB diode laser for atom interferometry at 780nm designed
- new type of narrow-linewidth laser at 689nm demonstrated in laser cooling of Sr
- ion array chip for magnetic sensors designed
- additive manufacturing of permalloys for magnetic shielding with first results
- several robust cold atom demonstrator realised and demonstrated on a large number of conferences, showcases and meetings with government and industry
- evaluated key uses of gravity sensing in civil engineering
- demonstrated benefits of atom magnetometers in brain sensing
Exploitation Route All these findings aim at initialising and being taken up an emerging quantum technology industry in the UK. We are actively engaging in a wide range of knowledge transfer activities and see a very good industry response with investment of their own money already resulting now. We anticipate this to grow much larger over the duration of the grant and to have a multi-£M QT industry in sensors and technology at the end.

Description The UK National Quantum Technology Hub in Sensors and Metrology has increased awareness in government, society and industry of the advantages and future technology potential of quantum sensors in real-world applications. The findings have been used in presentations and publications at the national and international level, including UK government and the European commission. In addition the findings have triggered interest in industry, resulting in multi £M investment form the commercial sector, in order to enter into quantum technologies and support knowledge transfer actions. The Hub has contributed the the GO-Science Quantum Blackett review and the JRC report on quantum timing. The Hub is now running over 35 partnership projects with industry partners, valuing over £20M and with an industry contribution exceeding £5M.

Title Diffraction grating characterisation for cold-atom experiments 
Description The premise of the associated paper focusses around the characterisation of micro-fabricated diffraction gratings with an aim towards implementation as a compact source for cold atoms. This characterisation entails an in-depth study of the effect of periodicity, duty cycle and coatings as a function of the diffraction efficiency. Furthermore, the paper offers a brief description of experimental critical parameters of implementation such as the tilt angle and incident wavelength. The Dataset comprises 5 Excel files, with the data used to create figures 3,4,5 and 6.

PI Contribution Covesion have joined the EPSRC Quantum Hub for Sensors and Metrology as a commercial partner via the hub's Research & Innovation projects scheme. Lead by the University of Southampton, SNOWQAT (Scalable Nonlinear Optical Waveguides for Quantum Atom Traps) is a hub partnership project based on the development of optical waveguides in Periodically Poled Lithium Niobite (PPLN) for wavelength conversion. In quantum technology, wavelength conversion enables the specific laser wavelengths required for light-matter interactions to be generated from existing standard laser sources; 780nm for Rubidium atom traps, 626nm for Beryllium ion traps, and 422nm for Strontium atom traps for example. Our team at the University of Southampton are developing new manufacturing techniques to develop rugged PPLN waveguides for quantum applications in atom/ion trapping, single photon generation, and gravity sensing.
Collaborator Contribution Covesion is Europe's leading manufacturer of periodically poled nonlinear crystals with an established user base of over 500 of the worlds leading universities, research institutes, and optics companies; this is our primary pathway to impact. Covesion currently supply around hundreds bulk PPLN crystals directly to quantum research groups per year, typically for generating wavelengths at 780nm for Rubidium or 626nm for Beryllium atom cooling. Covesion offer access to proprietary PPLN poling facilities, facet polishing of PPLN waveguides, and access to company staff and know-how in the packaging and testing of nonlinear optical materials; in addition, Covesion will contribute to IP filing costs, knowledge transfer support, and commercialisation of project outputs relevant to their business.
Impact To date this partnership project has been awarded by the Sensors and Metrology Hub and is pending contract completion and formal project start.

Impact Built a single tunable cavity to stablise 5 different laser wavelengths. This will be used to transfer the frequency stability of the clock laser to the other lasers in the experiment (679 nm repumper, 922 nm (frequency doubled to 461 nm) blue MOT, 689 nm red MOT, 813 nm lattice, 698 nm clock). Loaded a red MOT with 107 88Sr atoms at 1 µK. Loaded a 813 nm 'magic wavelength' lattice with 3x105 88Sr atoms. Built up the capability to do 87Sr clock measurements in parallel to the 88Sr system. Switching between the two isotopes simply requires the flip of a switch to select the correct AOM to shift the 689 nm red MOT laser between the different frequencies required by the two isotopes. Assembled an ECDL for a 2600 nm DFB diode laser to excite atoms along the 3P0 - 3D1 transition and measure the lifetime of the 3D1 state. A lifetime measurement with an accuracy below 5 ns will lead to a calculation of the polarisability of the clock transition and a reduction in the BBR shift uncertainty in neutral Sr lattice clocks.

Results and Impact Dr Michael Holynski gave one of three talks from externals to DSTL, with Michael's being the only technical contribution. The afternoon was technical discussion in work groups, with about 5-10 people having quantum expertise out of a total of 40-50 people.

A thanks and feedback letter was received by Michael from Dr Jane Goff, Dstl Platform Systems, on 28th July 16 which stated that "The day generated a number of valuable ideas which have been collated and will be used to influence decision making at the heart of the Ministry of Defence. Your expertise was crucial in focussing people's minds and giving an insight as to what may be possible in the future."
