Abstract

Previous research at Swansea University has demonstrated the feasibility of a novel High Integrity Gas-Shielded Interlayer Joining technology for joining a range of aerospace alloys. However, historically the applicability of such technology has been limited to titanium alloys due to higher temperatures and pressures required to obtain a high integrity bonding of nickel-based alloys. Such conditions were not granted by the rig in use till 2016, however a new joining method has now been developed starting from autumn 2016, with a considerable improvement of the performance. The focus of the research is therefore intended to explore the applicability of High Integrity Gas-Shielded Interlayer Joining of nickel alloys for aerospace applications.
